The Fort Monroe Moat Monster

For Wednesday, I decided to take a look at some of the cryptids in the Hampton Roads area, where, like UFO sightings, there is a long history of some weird creatures roaming the different corridors.

While this one is not mentioned often and really has no real evidence to back it up, it should be mentioned along with Chessie as a cryptid in the Hampton Roads area. The tale comes from a military base at Fort Monroe and has been passed down for decades.

As the tale goes, an army officer was on his way home when he saw something peculiar in the water while crossing the footbridge. The soldier described the creature as navigating its way through the moat towards the bridge, and it was described as something much larger than a fish.

Although no detailed description was given or passed down, this unknown creature was reportedly crisscrossing quickly across the moat before disappearing under the water just before reaching the bridge.

Of course, tales like this are often discounted, and in this case could be just an active imagination gone wild, but with the proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and even the Atlantic, where strange sea creatures have been mentioned since Columbus, to totally ignore the possibility would not be prudent.
